Public control in action: KTZh to have reported to the Samruk-Kazyna PC

Samruk-Kazyna JSC continues public reports of portfolio companies to the company. Today, the Public Council of the Fund, chaired by Bolat Zhamishev, has heard the report of JSC NC KTZh on the 2021 performance, its strategy, relations with trade unions, work of the Compliance Service and fight against corruption. Journalists and experts were invited to the meeting to ask questions about the company’s work.

According to the KTZh representatives, now the company accounts for 50% of cargo turnover and 75% of passenger turnover in Kazakhstan. KTZh actively supports domestic business: in recent years, about 500 locomotives, more than 3,000 wagons and platforms, about 500 thousand tons of rails and other railway products have been acquired from Kazakhstani manufacturers. 

The KTZh Group of Companies completed 2021 with positive indicators. Tariff cargo turnover amounted to 233 billion ton-kilometers. The volume of container traffic has also increased. Container transit through the territory of Kazakhstan exceeded 1 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent, i.e. the volume of a container 20 feet long or 6.1 m). The company’s net profit reached almost KZT120 billion.

In 2021, the salary of the production staff of KTZh was increased by 20%, from January 2022 – by 30%. In four months of 2022, the salary of railway workers exceeded the average income level in the country. The company pays special attention to improving working conditions and preventing injuries. In 2021, about KZT14 billion was allocated for labor protection measures.

Members of the Public Council also learned about the company’s major infrastructure projects. They include the modernization of the Dostyk-Moiynty railway corridor, which will increase the capacity of the transit corridor from China to Europe in five times. In addition, the company plans to build the Darbaza-Maktaaral railway line and the Zhetygen–Kazybek-Bek bypass railway line bypassing Almaty. This will unload the Saryagash border checkpoint, as well as the Tashkent and Almaty railway junctions.
