Samruk-Kazyna: Collaborative Efforts with Great Britain to Launch Sustainable Investment

October 28th, 2021 - The Investment Forum marking the 30th anniversary of Independent of Kazakhstan was held on London Stock Exchange. Management LSE, MFA of Kazakhstan, representatives of the Kazakh and British business community took part in the treaty event "The Future of Sustainable Investing: a Decisive Decade for ESG."

Representatives of the two countries discussed future activities and development projects for renewable energy,  hydrogen energy, initiatives to introduce new technologies, green finance instruments, and promising opportunities for deepening the British-Kazakh partnership in the low-carbon development sector. 

Panel presentations of the Investment Forum were made by Aida Sitdikova - Director of Energy Eurasia MEA EBRD, Ryad Yousuf - Managing Director Goldman Sachs, Kairat Kelimbetov - Governor at Astana International Financial Centre, Lord Maude of Horsham - Chairman FMAP Ltd. 

Almassadam Satkaliyev, at the meeting with Group Director of Capital Markets at LSEG Murray Roos, noted the success of cooperation between the Fund and LSEG by example, privatization of the Kazatomprom. Group Director of Capital Markets at LSEG Murray Roos stressed broad scope for development cooperation, particularly in the context of the upcoming IPO for Air Astana and KazMunayGas in 2022.  

On October 28th, the fourth meeting of the Kazakh-British Business Council was held in London. It was opened by Samruk-Kazyna CEO Almassadam Satkaliyev and the UK Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Kazakhstan Baroness Nicholson. 

The meeting focused on achieving carbon neutrality, developing clean technologies, and investing in close to United Nations Climate Change Conference.

"We are entering a new era in bilateral relations, which have demonstrated their value for 30 years, helping to bring prosperity to Kazakhstan through strategic investment and partnership. We celebrate these successes and congratulate Kazakhstan on this significant anniversary,"-said UK Trade Envoy. Baroness Nicholson applauded the leadership of Kazakhstan in the area of climate. She also noted the country's goal of zero emissions by 2060.

Almassadam Satkaliyev noted that Samruk-Kazyna, managing critical assets in various sectors of the economy, intends to contribute to the agenda of decarbonization. In the next decade, a group of companies will reduce their carbon footprint by 10%.  There is no doubt that the sustainability of the Fund is essential for the realization of its objectives and initiatives. Despite the world's epidemiological and economic crisis, Samruk-Kazyna managed to maintain growth. According to projections, the value of the Fund's assets will increase further by USD 2.8 billion to USD 67.4 billion in 2021,» added Mr. Satkaliyev.

Samruk-Kazyna and ARQ signed a memorandum of cooperation during the Council meeting, According to ARQ CEO Julian McIntyre, British investors are interested in recycling coal ash in Kazakhstan. Coal ash will be processed into fuel powder, mixing with petroleum products and eventually producing environmentally friendly fuel for ships. ARQ has agreements with the largest trader for the marketing of products on international markets. 

Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Great Britain Erlan Idrisov noted that the climate agenda provided a basis for further cooperation and would enrich the upcoming 8th Kazakhstan - UK Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Commercial, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation on November 4th in Nur Sultan.
