Samruk-Kazyna JSC and the American corporation General Electric (GE) discussed the implementation of joint energy projects aimed at improving the environment in Kazakhstan. Almassadam Satkaliev, the CEO of the Fund has met today in Nur-Sultan with Bela Ferenczi, the President of General Electric in Russia and the CIS.

Samruk-Kazyna considers GE as a potential supplier of highly efficient combined cycle gas plants. The equipment is necessary for the conversion to gas of three large thermal power plants in Almaty, as well as for the construction of a new gas power plant in the Turkestan region with a capacity of up to 1000 MW. Implementation of these projects will reduce the carbon footprint and minimize the negative impact on the environment by replacing coal with gas using GE environmentally friendly technologies.

“General Electric is a long-standing partner of Kazakhstan in the energy sector. The new Kazakhstan, which we are now building, will invariably need modern energy sources, the use of which reduces the amount of harmful emissions. Therefore, I am absolutely confident in the bright future of our cooperation with GE,”  the Head of Samruk-Kazyna said after the meeting.

Information:

Today, most of the electricity in Kazakhstan is generated from coal. The transition from coal to gas in the energy sector will significantly reduce harmful emissions: ash and soot — by 100%, sulfur dioxide — up to 99%, carbon monoxide — up to 68%, carbon dioxide — up to 50%, nitrogen oxides — up to 32%.

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, about 17.5 GW of new generating capacities should be commissioned in the country by 2035. About a third of them (6.5 GW) should be renewable energy sources (RES).
