South Korea to Share Its Experience in the Development of Nuclear Energy and Construction of Nuclear Power Plants with Kazakhstan

On September 20, a special delegation from Korea arrived in Astana to share their own experience in the development of nuclear energy and construction of nuclear power plants. 

The Korean delegation includes representatives of the leaders of the Korean nuclear industry - Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. (KHNP), KEPCO E&C, Korea Nuclear Fuel (KNF), the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Doosan Enerbility. Zhandos Nurmaganbetov, the Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, welcoming the delegation, noted the high level of development of the Korean nuclear industry and thanked for the willingness to share the accumulated experience.  

Dr.Yong-Soo KIM, the KHNP Vice President, expressed confidence on behalf of the Korean delegation that the close cooperation of our countries in the nuclear industry will be fruitful and mutually beneficial. 

During the workshop, the Kazakh specialists study the experience of implementing nuclear power plant construction projects in the UAE and Korea, consider possible cooperation schemes and discuss the safety systems of Korean nuclear power plants and their impact on the country’s economy and the environment. The work of the delegation will continue until September 23.  

During the visit, the Korean delegation will also take part in meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Samruk-Kazyna JSC and JSC NAC Kazatomprom.

As previously reported, Kazakhstan is currently studying the proposals of the world’s leading companies for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the country.  A subsidiary of the Samruk-Kazyna Fund, Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants LLP, is analyzing advanced technologies together and considering various options for implementing the project. At the moment, four suppliers with proven high-power reactor technologies are included in the shortlist.  It includes Korean KHNP, Chinese CNNC, Russian Rosatom and French EDF.
