On the sidelines of the Regional Environmental Summit, a framework agreement was signed today between Aktas Energy LLP (a joint venture between Samruk-Kazyna and TotalEnergies) and Japan’s Marubeni Corporation for the construction of a 1 GW wind power plant in the Zhambyl Region.

The agreement provides for the issuance, verification and commercialization of carbon credits generated by the Aktas Energy project under the Joint Credit Mechanism (JCM). This marks the first pilot project for which a Project Idea Note* (PIN) has been approved by the JCM Joint Committee, with the participation of the Governments of Kazakhstan and Japan, paving the way for the subsequent allocation of carbon credits.

The document was signed by Ilya Chernodarov, General Director of Aktas Energy LLP, and Kei Sato, General Director of Marubeni Middle East & Africa Power Limited.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the Management Board of Samruk-Kazyna JSC, and Yerlan Nyssanbayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan.

Marubeni Corporation is one of Japan’s largest trading and investment companies. Founded in 1858 and headquartered in Tokyo, it employs around 50,000 people and operates 130 offices worldwide. The company delivers projects across energy, infrastructure, industry and renewable energy sectors.

*Project Idea Note is a concept document outlining the project, including an estimate of expected greenhouse gas emissions reductions, as well as key parameters and implementation approaches.
