A meeting of the Public Council of Samruk-Kazyna was held to review the key performance indicators of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ).
KTZ Chairman Talgat Aldybergenov presented the company’s performance results for 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, while also outlining its strategic development priorities.
In 2025, KTZ delivered growth across all key indicators. Freight turnover increased by 7%, cargo transportation volumes rose by 6%, transit traffic grew by 20%, and exports expanded by 7%. Company revenue increased by 27%, while net profit more than doubled, rising 2.1-fold. The positive trend continued into the first quarter of 2026.
KTZ is continuing the modernization of its locomotive fleet. Between 2023 and 2025, the company acquired 433 locomotives. As a result, the average wear rate of the fleet declined from 66% to 58%, improving operational efficiency and railway performance.
The renewal of the passenger fleet is also underway. Over the past two years, the wear rate of passenger railcars has been reduced from 46% to 36%. By 2030, KTZ plans to procure an additional 746 passenger cars.
The national railway operator is also implementing a large-scale railway infrastructure development program. Construction is currently underway on approximately 900 kilometers of new railway lines, while around 3,000 kilometers of existing tracks are being modernized with the introduction of automatic block signaling systems.
Key projects include the Darbaza–Maktaaral, Moiynty–Kyzylzhar, and Bakhty–Ayagoz railway lines, as well as the Almaty bypass line. Several upgraded sections have already been commissioned ahead of schedule, including the Kyzylzhar–Sekseul, Altynkol–Zhetygen, and Aksu–Zhana-Semey routes.
